Closing statements in the Abdulrahman trial to be held December 11-13, 2024: Practical information <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n

According to the ICC statement below on its official website, the ICC hearings for the trial of Ali Kushayb will begin. He is one of the Janjaweed commanders charged with 31 counts. The charges relate to war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed ‘in the Darfur region, Sudan. The acts are said to have occurred between at least August 2003 and April 2004. <\/p>\n\n

“Closing statements in the case of The Prosecutor v. Ali Mohamed Ali Abdelrahman<\/em><\/a> (“Ali Kushayb”) is scheduled for December 11-13, 2024 at the headquarters of the International Criminal Court (“Court”) in The Hague, the Netherlands. Mr. Abdelrahman is charged with 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Darfur, Sudan, between at least August 2003 and April 2004. <\/p>\n\n

Statements will be made by the Office of the Prosecutor, the legal representatives of the victims and the defense and the judges may also ask questions and, if the Chamber permits, Mr. Abdurrahman may make a statement himself without being sworn in. After the closing statements, the Judges will begin their deliberations and the Judgment will be delivered in due course. <\/p>\n\n

Trial Chamber I is composed of Judge Joanna K\u00f6rner, Presiding Judge, Judge Reine Alapini-Ganso, and Judge Althea Violet Alexis-Windsor. <\/p>\n\n

Background:<\/strong> Mr. Abdelrahman is charged with 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Darfur, Sudan, between at least August 2003 and April 2004. The trial in the case before Trial Chamber I began on April 5, 2022. Fifty-six witnesses appeared in the courtroom during the presentation of the prosecution’s case and the prosecution finished presenting its evidence<\/a>. On June 5, 2023, the legal representatives of the victims made an opening statement. On June 5-7 and October 16-17, 2023, they were authorized to call one witness and the Co-Victims to testify before the Chamber. The defense called 18 witnesses before the Chamber and completed its evidence<\/a>.” <\/p>\n\n
