On March 6, 2025, we had the honor of speaking at the Human Rights Center at the University of Dayton for a presentation titled Silent No More: Two Decades of Genocide. This event was dedicated to raising awareness about the ongoing genocide in Dar Masalit and Darfur, Sudan. We aimed to shed light on the history of the conflict, its root causes, and the severe humanitarian crisis that continues to impact the region.
As a speaker, we highlighted an overview of the Darfur conflict, explaining its origins and the factors that have allowed it to persist for over two decades. Alongside with my fellow speakers, we shared photographs of survivors to illustrate the devastating impact of the genocide on individuals and entire communities. We also presented testimonies from survivors, sharing their personal stories and highlighting the ongoing struggles they face.
Additionally, I discussed the challenges that refugees encounter in camps, including the lack of essential resources, safety concerns, and limited access to education, healthcare, and other basic needs. A particularly urgent issue we addressed was the situation of Sudanese detainees and missing persons in Dar Masalit, including Sudanese Americans citizens whose whereabouts remain unknown.
This event was made possible through the support of the Darfur Network for Development (DND) and the Masalit Community of Ohio. Their sponsorship ensured that this critical issue received the attention it deserves and reinforced the importance of continued advocacy and action.
Through this presentation, we called on the international community to recognize and respond to the crisis, support survivors, and work towards justice and lasting peace in Sudan.
